Active Signage of Pedestrian Crossings as a Tool in Road Safety Management

The main objective of the study was to verify effectiveness active pedestrian crossings equipped with flashing lights activated automatically by detected pedestrians. A pilot conducted in two sites, where speed profiles vehicles over distance 30 m before crossing were analyzed. produced promising results terms reducing vehicle speeds so next investigated four other unsignalized crossings. They video-recorded for 48 h each, before, after and a year installation. ANOVA test used check statistical significance changes selected indicators. Even from installation, effect signage remained significant. average percentage drivers yielding pedestrians 77.4% higher waiting time 25.2% lower than 3.53 km/h on collector 2.60 arterial streets. decline probability being killed or severely injured (KSI) ranged 6.3 pp (9.4%) streets immediately installation up 12.9 (31.7%) one after.
